One of the features in this photo is the hedge of Shamrock Hollies, Ilex glabra ‘Shamrock’. Not a shamrock in the traditional sense of the word, but named as a variety for its rich green color.
Dan Dahlkemper designed this portion of the landscape when he was on the State Board of Landscape Architects. Tom and Michelle Ridge were in residence at the time and Dan helped them with some difficult areas around the house. This effort led to the regeneration of the Preservation Committee for the Governors Residence and improvements to other areas of the gardens and the home itself.
Hope you find a shamrock in your landscape today!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
