There are many considerations in developing a garden design. One of the most important is scale. The scale of the garden affects the way it is being viewed and the context has much to do with it.
This historic home is very strong in its architecture, a large scale residence. To match this, the landscape must strike a similar scale. Strong massing of color and line to compliment the structure. Additionally, the home is not near to the street, so the scale needs to be strong enough to make an impression from a distance, especially as people are driving by.
The garden style of the time incorporated formal elements close to the house and more natural elements away from the building. There were plans developed by a landscape architect from State College that were studied and interpreted for the new landscape layout. The results are very satisfying in the fit of the landscape to the lot and the home.
