Dahlkemper Landscape Architects & Contractors had been doing a number of projects for Erie Homes for Children and Adults, formerly the Erie Infants Home. These included landscape improvements and group home improvements to keep up the look and provide easier maintenance.
In 1997 an idea was floated to develop a garden of memories for the residents and former residents of the home. This became a butterfly garden with flowers for pollinators, a water features to soften the city sounds, raised planting areas and built in seating areas.
Since its installation, it has been maintained voluntarily by Chuck Dahlkemper in memory of his granddaughter, Krista, who had taken respite care at Erie Homes.
Today, the garden remains a focus of a memorial service each year that includes a butterfly release. This tradition has deep meaning to those who are remembered.
Improving the environment for those who we love for 60 years!
